Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic Acid is a substance found widely distributed throughout our body, including our skin, joints and cartilage. Within the skin, the high water-binding capacity of hyaluronic acid gives a natural hydrating function. which contributes to the skin’s suppleness and retention of moisture. Hyaluronic acid levels decline with age, causing dehydration of the skin and outer signs of aging.

Restylane is a highly purified form of hyaluronic acid formulated as a biocompatible filler material. Upon being injected in the skin it adds a natural volume and lift to smooth cosmetic defects. Because it is a naturally found substance it requires no allergy testing. The most common side effects are slight swelling and redness. Occasionally, bruising can occur depending on the areas treated.

Areas that respond well to dermal fillers include the nasal labial or marionette lines; upper and lower lip lines as well as most cosmetic defects. Restylane typically last 6-12 months after which it biodegrades by the bodies own mechanism and disappears without any residue.

Other filler options are available including Zyderm and Zyplast. These are bovine-derived collagen based fillers, which require allergy testing prior to injection. Bovine-derived collagen fillers last 3-4 months. New injectable fillers are on the horizon that promise to last longer and fill larger cosmetic defects. We will keep you updated!
